Figuring Out Figurative Language
English is a language filled with implied meaning and imagery. While it can paint a beautiful picture to communicate with it can also leave some of our student feeling overwhelmed and confused. This presentation will cover why figurative language can so frustrating for our students and what we can do to support their communication in a practical, meaningful way.
Putting Together the Context Clues
Developing semantic knowledge for students is key but we don't have the ability to teach them all the words and the word variations they will encounter in their lives. This meaning taking the time to teach them functional strategies they will actually use is going to be key. In this presentation you will be instructed on how to teach and reinforce using context clues with students in a meaningful way.
Building Tier 2 Vocabulary
Attendees will walk away from this session understanding benefits of working on vocabulary strategies rather than arbitrary word lists, benefits of focusing on Tier 2 vocabulary, and free resources to address goals. Perfect session for secondary school-based speech-language pathologists. Whether you are new to the field or veteran SLPs can walk away with practical ideas they can use the very next day.
