5-C Model of Communication
Speech-Language Pathologists teach communication skills, yet they often encounter communication breakdowns during IEP meetings, parent conferences, or one-on-one conversations with colleagues. This session introduces a conceptual framework, the 5-C Model of Communication - Conversation, Collaboration, Cooperation, Compromise, and Consensus. A guide to having productive interactions, building transparency, trust, and a shared vision.

Peggy S. Bud, Founder- Speaking Skillfully is a Communication Coach, Author, and TEDx Speaker (Redefining the Parent-Teacher Relationship). Using her 30+ years in public education as a speech-language pathologist and school administrator, she helps clients bridge the communication divide. She coaches business leaders and parents; helping them hone their verbal, non-verbal, and listening skills. She assists families in navigating the education process and facilitates conversations between parents and educators. As the co-author of Navigating Special Education, The Power of Building Positive Parent-Educator Partnership Peggy created a communication framework that ensures everyone has a voice at a meeting. She serves on the Board of a charter school and of a Connecticut-based Nature Center. Her clients come from various industries: education, medical, legal, financial, insurance, engineering, marketing, and media. She has spoken at National Conferences, Women's Summits, Rotary Clubs, and Libraries.

Let's Make Pickles! OT/SLP Collaborative Planning to Provide Integrated Therapy
Collaboration between occupational therapists (OTs) and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) is crucial in providing comprehensive and effective therapy services to students with complex bodies who use switches to communicate and access learning. We will share our literacy-based approach to create month-long lesson plans that target critical communication and activities of daily living (ADL) skills. The lesson plans include fun, engaging activities that build on each other and incorporate sensory activities to help students regulate their bodies and engage in learning. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems or voice output devices are also recommended to support communication within an activity. Adaptive equipment is used to facilitate the student's participation in activities. Through collaboration, OTs and SLPs can create functional and engaging lesson plans that support and monitor the student's development and success.
